Amparo Arjona

GED Instructor & Receptionist

Originally from the Dominican Republic, Amparo Arjona relocated to New York City in 1982. While Amparo was searching for a school for her children to attend, she stumbled upon MCIF Center. In 1994 Amparo enrolled in the ESL program at MCIF Center and studied for 2 years. She obtained her GED and Citizenship while studying at the Center.

In 1996, Sister Mary Burns, the founder of MCIF, gave Amparo the opportunity to make a difference at the Center and in the Bushwick community. Amparo became a teaching assistant for the ESL program and literally the “voice” of the Center as the receptionist. Amparo assisted others in getting their GEDs through her former position as the Pre-GED instructor. Amparo is currently the GED instructor, receptionist, and flea market cashier extraordinaire. She enjoys working at MCIF because of the family atmosphere.
